Mealworm Care & Storage

Mealworms are convenient feeders because they're easy to portion and can be maintained differently from more active feeders such as crickets. Proper storage helps keep them in good condition until you're ready to feed.

When your mealworms arrive

Bring the package indoors promptly and inspect the worms.

Depending on how you plan to maintain them, transfer them to an appropriate ventilated container and substrate.

Housing

Mealworms can be kept in a smooth-sided container with appropriate ventilation.

Their bedding can also serve as part of their food source when an appropriate dry substrate is used.

Keep the container clean and dry, and watch carefully for excess moisture or mold.

Temperature & storage

Keep mealworms in a stable environment away from extreme heat, direct sunlight and excess moisture. Storage conditions affect their activity and development, so follow the care instructions provided with your order.

Food & moisture

Provide appropriate dry food along with a controlled source of moisture.

Fresh vegetables can supply moisture, but don't allow wet food to remain long enough to spoil or cause excessive humidity.

Before feeding

Remove the amount you intend to feed and prepare the worms according to your normal feeding routine.
