Crickets are where most keepers start, and for good reason. The movement triggers a feeding response in almost every insectivore, they are easy to dust with calcium, and their moisture content is high enough to help with hydration.
They are also the most demanding feeder to keep alive — which is exactly why buying them in the right quantity matters more than buying them cheap. Order what your animals will eat in two weeks rather than the largest tub available.

One rule worth following: never leave uneaten crickets in an enclosure overnight. They will bite a sleeping reptile.
